We are proud to announce the release of CRDD’s 2025 Annual Report, marking the second year of our 2024–2030 strategy, “Making Research Work for Indigenous Knowledge, Traditional Institutions and Sustainable Development in the Drylands of Eastern Africa.” This year’s report reflects a period of deepened programmatic impact and growing institutional confidence, as CRDD continued to strengthen its identity as a locally embedded research institution rooted in the lived realities of pastoral communities across northern Kenya and the Horn of Africa.

The report highlights remarkable achievements across all our programmes. The Drylands Summer School in Isiolo brought together 33 Master’s and PhD students to explore locally grounded resilience narratives, while the Seed4Range Plus project reached 1,434 households, over 1,000 of them women, generating KES 2.6 million in fodder and seed sales. Meanwhile, the InfoRange project engaged 450+ community members through digital literacy and GPS-based rangeland governance tools, and our Early Warning Systems pilot with Oxfam GB consulted 191 community members to strengthen anticipatory humanitarian action in pastoral areas.

Beyond our programmes, 2025 was a year of significant institutional growth. CRDD published six peer-reviewed journal articles, presented at four international conferences, produced over 100 communications outputs, and welcomed new staff, fellows, and associate researchers who are deepening our intellectual capacity. As we look ahead, we remain committed to translating rigorous, community-centered research into meaningful policy change for the drylands of Eastern Africa. Download the full report here.
