Project/Program Overview
Center for Research and Development in Drylands (CRDD) is a non-profit organization that engages in people-centered research and development partnerships. It develops and implements approaches and provide services that catalyze sustainable development of livelihoods and welfare of communities living in drylands of Kenya. Drawing on extensive expertise and networks from the region, CRDD brings together stakeholders with diverse knowledge on the complex situations, challenges and opportunities in drylands.
CRDD has been working with communities and other stakeholders in providing technical support in the process of community land registration. In this regard, CRDD is currently implementing a short project that undertakes digital maps depicting areas of conflict that has implication on community land registration process developed. The organization requires someone with GIS expertise to support the mapping out of the conflict areas and presenting using mapping tools in a way that it can be clearly understood and reference in finding solutions.
Objectives
The purpose of the short-term consultancy is to provide technical expertise in GIS mapping to map out areas of dispute/conflict, which has implication on community land registration. This information will help the stakeholders in understanding the geographic area of conflict, the actors and the issues which supports in resolving for community land registration.
I. Scope of Work
The work will be conducted in Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipa counties in the areas where community land registration is applicable.
II. Key Responsibilities and Duties
- In discussions with stakeholders, conducting spatial analysis of dispute areas that has implications for community land registration.
- Creating maps and visualizations to communicate spatial information on the dispute/conflict areas effectively.
- Data Reporting: Preparing reports and presentations based on GIS analysis and findings.
- Maintaining and updating GIS databases, ensuring data integrity.
- Ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of spatial data.
- Effectively communicating the GIS information to stakeholders.
III. Required Skills and Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Remote Sensing, Computer Science or a related field required
- Required skills and qualifications
- Proficiency with GIS software such as QGIS and ArcGIS and related geospatial software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to effectively configure data
- Experience with various technology methodologies and applications
- Detail oriented and analytical thinker
- Knowledge of multiple programming languages
- Ability to process and analyze data
IV. Reporting
The GIS consultant will work closely with the project officer and reports to the Executive Director
Deliverables
- An inception report detailing the methods for data collection and analysis
- Detailed map of dispute and conflict areas in the 4 counties
- A comprehensive geospatial database of mapped dispute/conflict areas in the four counties
- Summary Report with key insights, maps, and recommendations for addressing conflict areas impacting land registration.
Timelines
The total number of days of this assignment is 20 consultancy days, which is distributed between the main tasks in the four counties as follows: –
- Field data collection (10days)
- Analysis and development of dispute/conflict area map (6days)
- Reporting and sharing of the final maps (4 days)
